Why Are US National Monuments So Popular

u.s.national monuments

U.S. National monuments are protected areas designated as a United States’ landmark. They are sometimes administered by states or other entities, while many are operated by the government itself. The purposes of a national monument are to honor the memory of the nation and to protect it from harmful elements. Among these are landmarks affected by civil war battles, such as Fort Lee in Virginia and Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. Others include natural formations like the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty, the Seven Hills of Texas, the Alaskan Wilderness, National Parks and Wildlife Abundance, National Seashores, National Forests, and other monuments designated as a historical, scientific, or cultural landmark.

An Overview

This form of government is made possible through the legislative body called the National Park Service or NPS. Within the National Park Service are three levels: the monuments in names, the historical or community parks, and the regional parks. A local park is a portion of the NPS system that is managed by a local government. Within each local park are hundreds or even thousands of different monuments. Some examples are Old Fort Bowie in Virginia, Horseshoe Falls in New York, or Fort Collins, Colorado. A National Monument, which is also known as a National Landmark, can be a building, a monument, an artwork, or part of a landscape.

For most people, visiting a national monument is much the same as visiting any other natural landmark. Usually, you must first obtain a license from the U.S. government before being allowed onto the property. This is required for all individuals, not just those who work for the government. It’s a good idea to make sure you can readily demonstrate your ability to safely travel around any national monument that you intend to visit. Some states offer special licenses for visitors, and some require a certain number of days of proof that you have visited within the last five years.

Must Know Things

Once you have obtained the proper authorization, you will be able to visit the monuments on your own, or with your family and/or friends. In some cases, you will need permission to be on site. That means you may have to pay a fee before you are allowed to enter the area. The fees can be expensive, so you should always check in advance about where you will be staying and if you will need to pay before you go. Many visitors find that paying ahead of time prevents any unforeseen expenses.

When it comes to U.S. national parks, there are two kinds: in area and not in the area. An example of a national park in an area is Yosemite National Park. An example of a national park in an area is Black Canyon National Park. While a national park is often found in the middle of a city, there are several that are found outside of major cities. There are dozens more parks located throughout the United States.

Determine Conditions

You can easily determine which monument you would like to visit by visiting the website of the Park Service, or by calling the visitor center. Within most parks you will see a map or blog that shows the area’s major attractions. You can also learn about the history of the monument and its significance to American heritage. For example, the Vietnam War Memorial National Museum is a great place to learn more about the Vietnam War. If you are looking for a historical monument to visit, there are dozens of sites to choose from such as the 9th Street Mission in New York City, the Landmark Clock Memorial in San Francisco and the Grand Canyon National Park.

If you travel abroad and take part in U.S. tours, there are many different national monuments to visit. Within the U.S., you will find the Statue of Liberty, the Washington monument, the Kennedy Center and many others. Europe is home to the Eiffel Tower, the Houses of Parliament, and the Picasso museum. In Asia, you can visit the Buddhist temple in Bangkok and the Forbidden City in Beijing. These sites have been turned into some of the best tourist attractions throughout the world.

As you can see, there are many reasons to visit these monuments. They have stood the test of time and provide insight into U.S. history. Now that you have a good idea of why they are so popular, hopefully you can come up with some other ideas for where you would like to go! Good luck!
