Antique jewelry is more precious as compared to regular jewellery. It has historical importance and a unique charm. Antique jewellery is not less than a hundred years old and carries with them a strong history and culture. They have traditional designs that people in the past have worn. However, this is not true in case all types of antique jewellery.

The story or history of antique jewellery dates back to the age-old practice of decorating the body. This decoration is not just confined to clothing but includes ornaments made from different materials and metals as well. In fact, for them, ornaments were far more important than clothing. Before the discovery of precious metals and stones, the people living along the seashore used different shells as ornaments. But On the other hand, people of the inland areas decorated their bodies with the animal bones that they kill.

Discovering The First Precious Stone

As social order and human civilization took a form and structure, agriculture and animal husbandry was at the centre of focus. Such a shift in focus slowly paved the way for the discovery of minerals and precious metals like gold. Gold was amongst the first precious metals to be discovered by humankind.

In due course of time, the discovery of other metals like silver, diamond, platinum took place.  For instance, people started wearing more ornaments like crowns, tiaras, hairpins, etc. on their heads. Likewise, there were different ornaments for different parts of the body.

Sumerian

One of the most critical kinds of antique jewellery found in the world is those in Queen Puabi’s tomb. The tomb is at a place called Sumer. It is now known as Tall al-Muqayyar. Inside the crypt, the people covered the queen’s upper body with a golden robe. Apart from gold, it also had a touch of silver, agate, lapis lazuli and chalcedony touch in it. Other ornaments of gold like necklaces, rings, bracelets, etc. were also there. Sumerian antique jewellery was far advanced than their age. They also employed the technique of adding colours to different pieces of jewellery.

Egyptian Antique Jewellery

The stories of old jewellery in Egypt came into light with the discovery of the pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb. The tomb revealed some amazing Egyptian treasures that spoke loud about the rich culture of jewellery in Egypt. Egyptian Museum now displays this precious treasure. Moreover, It is the most significant gold jewellery that the world has witnessed so far. The coffin of the pharaoh was of gold. There were other boxes too. They contained more antique jewels in the form of necklaces, crowns, diadems, amulets, earrings, bracelets, etc.

All of these are typical Egyptian jewellery. Egyptian jewellery designs were very sacred to their culture. For instance, there were pieces of jewellery designed as some religious symbols. Such jewellery has a high value in Egyptian culture both in terms of beliefs and design. Gold was the most commonly used metal in the making of Egyptian jewellery.
